The curriculum of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering allows students to go
through the introduction, basics, application and development of Civil and Environmental Engineering in practical lessons.

1st year

The department teaches foundational subjects such as mathematics, mechanics and information processing, and provides introductory education allowing students to actively think about the fields in which civil and environmental engineering should be applied, and the philosophy with which it should be approached.

2nd/3rd year

As students progress to higher grades, there are more specialized classes for them to learn specialized knowledge relating to the three divisions that make up the department. In addition to attending lectures, students are expected to conduct experiments, undergo practical training and attend seminars to develop their ability to apply their knowledge. The department enables students to acquire practical skills through internship, special design training and value engineering courses.

4th year/post-graduate courses

Fourth-year students belong to research laboratories, conduct specialized research and undergo training in small classes, and work on a graduation thesis and plan as the culmination of their four years in the department.
The curriculum is also designed to allow students to enhance their specialty in post-graduate courses.
In each grade, students can acquire broader knowledge through language education and themed studies that serve as sub-major subjects which cross the borders between schools in the university — which is possible because Waseda is a comprehensive university. While enrolled in the department, students can obtain special qualifications and become eligible to sit examinations.
