What is civil and environmental engineering?
Civil and environmental engineering is an applied science that deals with the protection of the natural environment, improvement of human environment and the safety of human society, among other things, from a global viewpoint. On the basis of engineers’ ethics, civil and environmental engineering plays an important role of pursuing ways to build infrastructure indispensable for people leading a safe and cultured life in harmony and coexistence with nature.
The Department of Civil Engineering that has maintained its tradition for 60 years in the 100-year history of Waseda University’s School of Science and Engineering was reorganized into the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the academic year of 2003. As its name indicates, civil and environmental engineering is a type of engineering in which human life and the natural environment are closely related to each other. Synthesizing highly public fields, the department seeks to develop modern human society and to build a future society for humans.
