Q1 : Can I learn about bridges?

A1:Yes, you can. Specifically, students in this department can learn basic theories on engineering, such as structural mechanics, structural concrete, soil mechanics and bridge engineering. Moreover, structural design exercises and space design allow students to practically learn about bridges.

Q2: Can I learn about environmental issues?

A2:Yes you can. The department conducts research and education on water quality control, advanced water treatment, responses to new types of water contamination such as environmental endocrine disruptors, naturalizing of rivers, recycling of construction materials, soil contamination, improvement of transportation systems, which are closely linked to environmental problems involving urban areas and environmental problems related to city planning.

Q3 : Can I learn about disaster prevention?

A3:Yes, you can. The department has lectures on earthquake disaster prevention engineering as well as aquatic environmental conservation and disaster prevention engineering dealing with landslides and floods caused by typhoons and torrential rains. In these lectures, you can learn about the mechanisms of such disasters and about the technologies and measures to prevent them.

Q4: Are there differences between learning city planning and town building in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Division and the Department of Architecture?

A4:In the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, you can learn the fundamentals of city planning and town building through subjects in the Planning and Management Division, and conduct surveys and analysis of the layout of urban areas and regional communities, along with space composition, urban development and urban transportation systems from the viewpoint of engineering. You can also conduct research on the process and methods of planning and research from the viewpoint of landscape design.

In the Department of Architecture, on the other hand, you can learn the basic ideas of city planning and methods of urban design through case studies of many cities through subjects in the city planning division.

Accordingly, there is common ground when it comes to research on city planning and town building in the two departments, and there is exchange between professors and post-graduate students in these departments. The difference is that the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering tends to conduct research from the viewpoint of engineering and pays close attention to broader areas while the Department of Architecture tends to compile an entire picture of city planning and town building by analyzing individual components that make up the town.

Q5: Is there anything in particular that can help students with their choice of department?

A5:There are a number of similarly named departments, such as Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Urban Infrastructure Engineering, and Department of Urban Environment Design Engineering. Although they all have unique features, they generally share a foundation in civil engineering.

I think the book Yoh-koso Doboku Gakka E! [Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering!] (Gakugei Shuppansha, ISBN:978-4-7615-1349-8) by Professor Yoh Sasaki et al. is especially helpful, being written as it is for those with an interest in this field.
